Isn’t she lovely?!?! When I saw Janelle Monáe’s images from her latest photoshoot as the new face of Covergirl, I literally did an e-backflip at my desk!! I was so happy. Janelle Monáe (born Janelle Robinson), has been on the music scene since the mid-2000’s adding her eclectic and diverse take on music, fashion and beauty. Monáe is not only a pioneering voice for her generation’s genre of music, she’s also known for her eclectic and out the box style with her signature black and white tuxedo suits and natural-haired pompadour.
As the mom of three kinky-haired, brown-skinned girls I’m always looking for images of great role models of color to showcase to my daughters. And I’m glad the torch as been passed to Monáe as the next woman of color to be the face of Covergirl. Tyra Banks, Queen Latifah and Rihanna have all been named faces of the brand. Monae told Vogue.com that she used to admire Banks’ CoverGirl ads. You see how important it is to show our girls positive images of woman who look like them!
